I think it’s a damn shame that we, as a country, have taken so long to make Same Sex Marriage legal. As Australians we enjoy thinking of ourselves as an accepting, embracing and progressive community, however these qualities are so rarely exemplified by the actions of our politicians. Despite being so frequently let down by our elected representatives, a spirit remains undiminished, a spirit of resilience and of overcoming. It was this spirit that encouraged Mel and Patch to forge ahead with a commitment that they had been wanting to make for many years. They were done waiting for the world to change, it would just have to catch up to them. It’s hard to pick just one memorable moment from the day, but if I had to, it would have to be Patch’s mum, Virginia’s, speech. Speaking in her native Spanish, while having it translated by her eldest daughter Bertina, her tender and heartfelt words ensured that there wasn’t a dry eye in the house.
